Learning Reflection

In Discourse Approach in Reading Course, I knew about a list of discourse markers as follows:

Moreover, there are 9 lesson that I have to know as follows:

1.) Recount

There are three types as follows :
1. Personal Recount – retelling of an activity that the writer/speaker has been personally involved in (e.g. diary entry)
2. Factual Recount – recording the particulars of an incident (e.g. report of a science experiment, police report, news report, historical account)
3. Imaginative Recount – taking on an imaginary role and giving details of event (e.g. a day in the life of Roman slave; how I invented….)

The recount begins with an orientation (background information) to tell who was involved, where it happened, when it happened or what was it. Next it unfolds with a series of events ordered in a chronological sequence. Finally, we should have personal comment at various stages.

2.) Narratives

There are many types such as fairy stories, mysteries, science fiction, romances, etc.  This lesson my teacher assigned role-play in title “Secrets by Tim Winton”.

3.) Descriptive
Purpose is to describe person, place or thing. It use adjective to describe. Description must have imagination when I describe, I will imagine to tell someone understand.

Examples

4.) Procedure

The structure is easily recognised, usually consisting of :
Goal (often indicated in the main heading and / or diagram)
Materials (listed in order of use)
Method (steps oriented towards achieving the goal)

Example

5.) Comparison and Contrast

To compare between two or more thing that similarities or differences.

6.) Cause and Effect

7.) Definition and Classification
Definition is a statement that explains the meaning of a word or phrase.
Classification  is the act or process of dividing things into groups according to their type.
Examples :
Phonetics is the study of the speech sounds used in human languages.
Here a technical term is defined by the words that follow a from of the verb to be
Matter is defined as anything that occupies space and has weight.
Here a technical term is defined after the verb phrase is defined as…

8.) Exemplification
To add more information to explain, persuade, define, or illustrate a general idea. I learned abbreviations and transitions in exemplification text.

Examples follow:
           vf.e / e.g. – for example
vi.e – that is (to say); in other words
           vfor instance
va case in point is  ,etc.

9.) Problem and Solution
Problem and solution is a pattern of organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or attempted solution). I learned about problem and solution markers.
 Problem markers :
burden, challenge, complication, concern, etc.
Solution markers :
to address, to cope with, to overcome, to solve, etc.

Example

I like procedure lesson because it’s easy to understand. It have step of text.

Moreover I am enjoy because I showed how to make sandwich to my friends via my video.

I think most of lesson is difficult for me. I’m not good in translation because assignment have to translate. I don’t know meaning some vocabulary.

So I do exercise with myself. If I can’t understand, I will ask my friends. Maybe I use dictionary for translation.

I think this course is necessary for English Education Major. In the future I will bring knowledge from this course to apply for my job. I am glad because I studied with Aj. Usa Noytim. She made me relax for studying. She is kind and reasonable.

15 Learning Reflection

Teacher answered exercise 1-2 from last week. There are many texts to practice me. I found main idea, a title and to create a diagram.

Example
From exercise 1 #2

The term “Amnesia” refers to complete or partial memory loss. Almost all of us will experience some form of Amnesia in our lives, even if it’s just a simple case of verbal amnesia, like forgetting someone’s name. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to prevent amnesia. Here is a list of foods that you can eat to improve your memory: almonds, walnuts, bananas, honey, apples, and black pepper. Though memory in daily life if you eat them regularly enough.

Main idea : You can prevent amnesia by eating some food.
A title : How to Prevent Amnesia
A diagram :

Next I watched friends’ video about cooking from procedure lesson.

From exercise I think finding problem and solution are easy because discourse markers help me understand.

However, some vocabulary is difficult because I’m not good in translation.

So I consult my dictionary and ask my friends.

However I will try to improve myself.

14th Learning Reflection

First of all, we did exercise about Hazards in home and Language in birds from exemplification lesson.

Then, we started problem and solution Lesson. Problem and solution is a pattern of organization where information in a passage is expressed as a dilemma or concerning issue (a problem) and something that was, can be, or should be done to remedy this issue (solution or attempted solution). Teacher shown me example. After that, we learned about problem and solution markers.

Problem markers :
burden, challenge, complication, concern, etc.

Solution markers :
to address, to cope with, to overcome, to solve, etc.

Next, we did skill practice. We found problem and solution markers in the text.

For me, this lesson is difficult.  I can’t find easy.

For this reason, I translated text with dictionary.

I'm a little worried because The lesson is difficult.

13th Learning Reflection

We studied “Exemplification”
Exemplification uses specific, vivid examples for the purpose of adding more information to explain, persuade, define, or illustrate a general idea. We learned abbreviations and transitions in exemplification text.
Examples follow:
² f.e / e.g. – for example
² i.e – that is (to say); in other words
² for instance

² a case in point is

We read the texts : College Students’ Pressures, Fun things to Do in Great Falls and Hazards.

Text 1 :  College Students’ Pressures
This text told about many college students face a number of pressures.
There are 3 discourse markers : for instance, for example and another example of.

Text 2 : Fun things to Do in Great Falls
It told about there are many ways to have fun in Great Falls without Spending a Fortune. For examples, play in water at Electric City Water Park, watching movies at Carmike Ten, feed giant fish at Giant Springs, walk and see the view at River’s Edge Trail etc.

Text 3 : Hazards
We learned about many hazards in the home that jeopardize a child’s safety can be easily eliminated. For examples, poisoned by some houseplants, chemical products or furniture. We must to eliminate the danger.

I like exercises of this lesson. They aren’t difficult for me, but some vocabularies are difficult for me.

So I consulted dictionary.

I feel happy with this lesson. I like exemplification. It make me understand when I read the texts.

12th Learning Reflection

We studied Definition and Classification.

Definition is a statement that explains the meaning of a word or phrase.

Classification  is the act or process of dividing things into groups according to their type.

Example :

Phonetics is the study of the speech sounds used in human languages.
Here a technical term is defined by the words that follow a from of the verb to be

Matter is defined as anything that occupies space and has weight.

Here a technical term is defined after the verb phrase is defined as…

Furthermore,  we also learned definition and classification markers.  And found the definition markers, the technical terms and the definitions from skill practice 1-3.

We read the texts about “What is Anthropology?” and “Species of Whales”

We knew anthropology is the study of man. There are 2 type : physical anthropology and cultural anthropology. We divided and completed the diagram.

.........................................

Text 2 : Species of Whales, we found discourse markers, main idea and classified species. There are 2 species of whales : toothed and baleen.

I think, text 1-2 are easy  because their used vocabulary that I can understand.

Skill practice 1-2 are difficult for me. I can not find discourse markers.

For this reason, I  consulted my friends.

I feel good with this lesson. I like atmosphere in my classroom.

11th Learning Reflection

We did skill practice 2 of cause and effect lesson. We read factors contributed to the disaster of
the Titanic.

These are 3 factors that follow:

First, the Titanic carried only sixteen lifeboats.
Second, crew was not given enough time to become familiar with the ship.
And third factor, they received a number of warning about icebergs in the area, but they took no precautions.

After that, we wrote the cause and effect diagrams.
Next we studied The Effect of Stress and answered the questions. In this text, I knew new vocabulary that follows :
asthma
numerous /ˈnjuː.mə.rəs/  many
asthma /ˈæs.mə/ a medical condition that makes breathing difficult by causing the air passages to become narrow or blocked
elated /ɪˈleɪ.tɪd/ extremely happy and excited, often because something has happened or been achieved
bliss  /blɪs/ perfect happiness
depression /dɪˈpreʃ.ən/  the state of feeling very unhappy and without hope for the future
whimsy /ˈwɪm.zi/  something that is intended to be strange and humorous but in fact has little real meaning or value

Vocabularies are easy because I understood meaning vocabularies, but finding the main idea is difficult for me because the text is many paragraph.

I feel happy. The lesson isn’t complex for me.
I liked to read the fact story.
